Inmate at MACC stabbed to death

McALESTER — An inmate at the Mack Alford Correctional Center in Stringtown was stabbed to death by a group of three inmates, correctional officials said.

Deshawn A. Reed, 23, was taken to Mary Hurley Hospital in Coalgate on Thursday after the assault, according to MACC Warden’s Assistant Trent Griffin. “(Reed) was pronounced deceased upon arrival,” Griffin said.

“The assault took place in the B-Unit housing unit inside a cell,” Griffin said. “The assault involved three attackers and two victims.” Griffin said that correctional officers immediately responded to the scene of the assault and restrained all inmates involved and placed them in administrative segregation.

“The other victim received minor injuries during the assault,” Griffin said. “Homemade knives were the weapons used during the assault.”

On Friday, Griffin said the facility is on lockdown status “until further notice” and the Department of Corrections Internal Affairs Division is investigating the incident.

At the time of his death, Reed was serving a 22-year sentence for a Tulsa County first degree manslaughter conviction, according to Griffin. He began serving time at MACC on June 15, 2011, and was scheduled to be released on April 15, 2032, according to the Oklahoma Department of Correction website at www.doc.state.ok.us. A parole hearing was scheduled for Reed in November of 2028.
