McALESTER —
An inmate who escaped from the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center in McAlester on Thursday morning was apprehended in a motel room in Tulsa less than 12 hours after his escape.
Kenneth M. Hammick II, 27, was last seen at the correctional facility Thursday at the 6:30 a.m. count, according to JBCC Chief of Security Rick Caywood. “He was discovered missing at our regularly scheduled 8:30 a.m. count,” Caywood said. “We did a special count to verify and it was confirmed at 9:26 a.m.”
Hammick “was apprehended by DOC internal affairs unit in Tulsa,” Caywood told the News-Capital Friday morning. “We believe he got a ride to Tulsa but have not been able to obtain exact information of who it was.” Caywood said Hammick was tracked down and apprehended in an Econo Lodge motel room in Tulsa at 5:55 p.m. Thursday evening. Caywood said there was a woman in the room with him when he was taken back into custody.
Area residents received notification of the escape at approximately 10:45 a.m. Thursday. The notification had incorrect information and stated an inmate had escaped from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, a maximum security prison in McAlester. At around 11:15 a.m., a second notification was sent to area residents stating that Hammick did not escape from OSP and in fact, escaped from JBCC.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website, Hammick is set for release Aug. 5, 2014. He has been in DOC custody since Aug. 2, 2011.
He was charged Thursday in Pittsburg County District Court with one felony count of escape from Department of Corrections. If convicted, Hammick is facing an additional two to seven years incarceration.
