Inmate dies at OSP in McAlester

McALESTER — An inmate at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester died early Monday morning.

Officials at the maximum security facility said that Fredrick B. Zimmer, 63, died of what is believed to be natural causes.

“On Nov. 12 at approximately 12:25 a.m. an offender housed in the institution’s Medical Unit was found unresponsive,” said Terry Crenshaw, OSP’s warden’s assistant. “Security and medical staff responded. The offender was pronounced deceased at 12:52 a.m.”

Crenshaw said that although Zimmer’s cause of death is unknown, it is believed that he died of natural causes.

Zimmer was serving a 10-year prison sentence for Noble County felony convictions including rape by instrumentation, forcible sodomy and two counts of lewd or indecent proposals or acts to a child younger than 16 years of age. He was convicted of these crimes on March 1, 2010, and began serving time in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections on March 9, 2010.

“He was transferred to OSP on Nov. 5, 2012, from the Jess Dunn Correctional Center” in Taft, Crenshaw said. “When we received him he was housed on our medical unit.”

Zimmer was scheduled to be released Jan. 14, 2020, and had a parole hearing scheduled in May of 2018.
