County commissioners to make decision on road to "fishing hole" on Tuesday

McALESTER — County commissioners will make a final decision on whether or not to close an old county road that leads to a fishing hole next week, according to District 18, First District Attorney Richard Hull.

“The commissioners will make the judgment at next week’s meeting,” Hull said after Monday’s regular meeting of the Pittsburg County Commissioners.
Low Water Dam Road runs between private property and Federal property managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The road leads to fishing area, however vehicle access to the lake is prevented by a large mud hole.
An April letter from District 18 First  Assistant District Attorney Richard Hull revealed an agreement with District 1 County Commissioner Gene Rogers that no more road work would be done on Low Water Canyon Road until a final decision is made.
In September Pittsburg County Commission Chairman Gene Rogers said one of his employees was suspended after working on the road in July.
The platted county road has been the center of discussion during several commissioners meetings and residents who live near the road who want the road closed and county employees along with other residents who use the road to access fishing and hunting requested that the road stay open.
Rogers has maintained that the road has always been open. However Jim B. Miller attorney for one of the residents who lives near the road said the road had been abandoned for several years and so the county effectively closed the road.
The commissioners will make their decision on the road on Tuesday during their regular meeting at 9 a.m. in the commissioners conference room at the Pittsburg County Court House. The commissioners usually meet Monday but the meeting was rescheduled because of the Columbus Day Holiday. The meetings are open to the public.
