Checotah man pleads guilty to federal drug conspiracy charge

McALESTER — A Checotah man recently pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of drug conspiracy.

Jessie Lee Layman, 23, was indicted in September, according to a press release by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

“The charge arose from a joint investigation,” the release states, “by the following agencies: Eufaula Police Department, Checotah Police Department, McAlester Police Department, Krebs Police Department, District 18 District Attorney’s Drug Task Force, District 25 District Attorney’s Drug Task Force, McIntosh County Sheriff’s Department, Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department, Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Drug Enforcement Administration.”

According to the release, between October of 2010 and February of 2012, Layman had methamphetamine in his possession with intent to distribute.”

Kimberly E. West, Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, presided over the hearing and Assistant United States Attorney Shannon Henson prosecuted the case.

Layman will remain in the custody of the United States Marshal Service pending sentencing, according to the release. He is facing 5 to 40 years imprisonment and up to a $5 million fine.
