Sex offender gets prison time for failing to register; larceny

McALESTER — A McAlester man was recently sentenced to prison time for failing to register as a sex offender and stealing from Walmart.

Melvin Duane Roberts, 41, pleaded guilty Nov. 13 in Pittsburg County District Court in two separate cases to charges of failure to register as a sex offender and larceny of merchandise from a retailer. He was fined $850.

He was sentenced to 10 years, with seven suspended, for the failure to register charge. He was sentenced to serve two years in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections for the larceny charge. Both sentences are to be served concurrently.

According to court records, McAlester police responded to a call regarding an unrelated incident in September and came into contact with Roberts. When police questioned him about a place of residence, Roberts told him he lived in a home in the 800 block of East Delaware Avenue in McAlester, according to a police affidavit. Police then found out that Roberts was a sexual offender and had last registered as such in March and listed an address in the 4000 block of Anderson Road.

In October, police were dispatched to Walmart in McAlester regarding a theft. According to a police affidavit, Roberts had loaded up nearly $1000 worth of merchandise in a cart and exited Walmart with the items without paying for them.

In March 1998, Roberts pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor child and in April 1998 he was sentenced to 20 years on each count, to be served concurrently.

According to the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Daily inmate list, Roberts is currently in custody at the Pittsburg County jail and is waiting to be transported to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.
