McAlester woman accused of harboring a fugitive

McALESTER — A McAlester woman was recently accused of harboring a fugitive from justice.

Aubrey Barnes, 24, was charged Wednesday in Pittsburg County District Court in a case accusing her of harboring Colton Courts, a Union City Correctional Center escapee, in her McAlester home.

According to court records, Courts escaped from the Union City Correctional Center on Nov. 24. “Courts was discovered missing and a warrant was issued from Oklahoma County for escape from a penal institution,” court records state.

He is currently serving a 10-year sentence for a charge of manufacture of a controlled dangerous substance and a nine-year sentence for a drug possession with intent to distribute charge. He is scheduled to be released from custody Sept. 3, 2016, and has a parole hearing set for July.

In the process of his investigation and search for Courts, an Oklahoma Department of Corrections Internal Affairs agent was led to Barnes’ home in McAlester, according to court records.

“While speaking to Barnes at the front door of the (Legends Lane) residence,” a police affidavit states, the agent “asked if Courts was at the residence and Barnes said ‘no.’”

After further searching, the agent allegedly found Courts hiding in one of Barnes’ back bedrooms, the affidavit states.

Both Barnes and Courts are in custody at the Pittsburg County jail. Courts is being held for the DOC and Barnes is being held without bond, according to Thursday’s PCSO daily inmate list. She was unavailable for comment at presstime.

If convicted, Barnes is facing up to 10 years in prison.
