McAlester man accused of making meth near daycare

McALESTER — A McAlester man is accused of manufacturing methamphetamine near a daycare center.

James Dean Schoggins, 21, was charged Feb. 19 in Pittsburg County District Court with multiple drug-related felonies.

According to court records, Schoggins was allegedly manufacturing methamphetamine and keeping /selling drugs out of his Main Street Apartment, which is 267 feet from the Lil’ Explorers Child Care and Early Learning Center on East Madison Avenue.

Schoggins is facing the following charges:

• Possession of a controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine) within 2,000 feet of a daycare;

• Manufacturing a controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine);

• Maintaining a place for keeping /selling controlled substances; and

• Misdemeanor unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a police affidavit, McAlester police executed a search warrant in Schoggins’s apartment Feb. 17 and allegedly found numerous items associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamine. Officers also used a laser range finder to measure the distance between Schoggins’s apartment and the daycare and determined the distance to be just short of 270 feet.

Schoggins is in custody at the Pittsburg County jail and was unavailable for comment at presstime. He is being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond and was due back in court Feb. 22 at 9 a.m.

If convicted, he is facing up to life in prison.
