McAlester man accused of robbing at gunpoint

McALESTER — A McAlester man was recently accused of robbing another man at gunpoint for $140.

Joshua James Maxey, 27, was charged Monday (Dec. 3) in Pittsburg County District Court with one felony count of first degree robbery.

According to court records, Maxey was traveling in a vehicle with another man on North Main Street in McAlester on Nov. 27 at around 4:30 p.m. The two men saw a man walking and stopped to ask if he wanted a ride. Edward Rea accepted the men’s offer of a ride and got into the back seat of the vehicle, according to court records.

“After riding a black or two, (Maxey) turned around and pointed a handgun at Rea and told Rea to give them all of his money,” court documents allege. “Rea had $140 and handed it to the passenger,” who was later identified as Maxey. “The car pulled over in front of Fat Boys Pizza and (the men) let Rea get out.”

When Rea gave a description of the two men to police, a McAlester police officer recognized the description of one of the men and showed Rea a photo lineup, according to court records. Rea pointed to the photo of Maxey and allegedly told police that Maxey was the man who pointed a gun at him, court records state.

If convicted, Maxey is facing up to 10 years in prison. He is currently in custody at the Pittsburg County jail in lieu of a $75,000 bond and was unavailable for comment at presstime today.

He is due back in court Feb. 7.
