Krebs man pleads guilty to child abuse

McALESTER — A Krebs man recently pleaded guilty to child abuse charges after spanking and bruising two young children.

Dewayne Owen McCarty, 29, pleaded guilty Jan. 4 in Pittsburg County District Court to two counts of child abuse by injury. He was fined $700 and judgment and sentencing were deferred for three years on each count, to run concurrently.

According to court records, McCarty spanked two children, ages 4 and 5, for not eating and the spanking left bruises on the children’s butts.

According to a police affidavit, McCarty told police that he had been having a difficult time getting the two children to eat. “He said that when they wouldn’t eat he spanked them. (He) said that he spanked them with his hand too hard and left bruises,” the affidavit states.

Police observed and photographed the children’s injuries three days after the alleged spanking. “I looked at the photographs and observed what appeared to be large bruises covering most of the left buttock and a small portion of the right buttock on both children,” Krebs Police Officer Dustin Nash stated in a police affidavit.
