Charges dismissed for McAl. man accused of gun assault

McALESTER — Charges were recently dismissed for a McAlester man accused of burglary and a gun assault.

Billy Keith Largent, 46, was charged in May in Pittsburg County District Court with one count of first degree burglary and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

On Aug. 30, both charges were dismissed without costs on a motion by the District 18 District Attorney’s office.

“The victim didn’t want to prosecute,” said District 18 Assistant District Attorney Wesley Cherry. “The victim wrote a statement to that effect and did not show up for the preliminary hearing.”

According to court records, Largent allegedly entered a residence on South A Street in McAlester “by forcibly kicking in the door” and struck a man by “pistol whipping” him “in the face with a .45 caliber Rock Island Arms pistol.”

According to a police affidavit, Largent said he was warning people in the home “that there was a thief in the neighborhood and that they needed to lock their vehicles and house.” While he was warning them, someone in the home allegedly jumped Largent and hit him in the face, according to the affidavit.

Largent allegedly told police that he left the house, retrieved his gun and confronted the man who hit him, according to the affidavit. The man had left the area and, according to witnesses, Largent used his gun to strike another man who was in the home.
