Choctaws urged to get ready to vote

McALESTER — The Choctaw Nation is working to encourage it’s members to register to vote, according to Brian McClain executive director for the Choctaw Nation.

“We want to encourage those that aren’t registered to vote to do so,”McClain said.
“And for those that have registered, we want to encourage them to vote.”
He said the Oct. 12 deadline to register to vote is just around the corner.
On Wednesday, information about registering and about the upcoming election was given during a  senior lunch at Choctaw Community Center in McAlester.
“We aren’t supporting any particular party,” McClain said. “We are just helping our elders get the information they need to vote.”
He said percent of eligible American Indian and Alaska Natives are not registered to vote.
According information provided by the Choctaw Nation, more than one million Natives are not registered to vote and tribal sovereignty stands as the legacy of generations of Native people who fought for the right to participate in the American democracy.
“We just want our people to feel informed and empowered when they go to vote,”McClain said.
