High speed chase leads to charges for Ada man

McALESTER — A man who allegedly led authorities on a high speed chase through McAlester was charged recently.

Wesley Wayne Manuel, 22, of Ada, was charged Tuesday in Pittsburg County District Court with felony eluding a police officer. He was also charged with multiple misdemeanor counts, including driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, obstructing an officer, improper passing and operating a motorcycle without a license and proper endorsement.

On Nov. 10, Manuel allegedly took local police on a high speed chase reaching speeds excess of 120 miles per hour.

At around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, a high speed chase began when a man riding a 2001 Yamaha XMU motorcycle south on Main Street attempted to allude McAlester Police when an officer tried to stop the motorcycle at Oklahoma Avenue and Main Street, according to Det. Capt. Gary Wansick.

Kiowa police joined the chase and, at approximately 10: 27 p.m., a police officer said over the radio that he had topped speeds of 120 miles per hour in his police car, according to the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office radio transmissions. The officer said he was losing the motorcycle and said he was going to back off.

Wansick said the chase continued south on U.S. Highway 69 through Savanna and then Kiowa.

At about 10:30 p.m., an officer said over the radio the motorcycle had crashed.

Wansick said the chase ended south of Kiowa with the assistance of Pittsburg County Sheriffs Department and Kiowa police.

Wansick said Manuel was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

Manuel was then arrested by MPD officers in the early morning hours Sunday. He was transported to the Pittsburg County jail, where he later posted a $500 bail bond and was released from custody.

If convicted, Manuel is facing up to five years in prison for the felony eluding charge and up to a year incarceration on the DUI and obstruction charges. He is facing up to six months jail time for allegedly riding a motorcycle without a license and up to 10 days for the improper passing charge.

Manuel is due back in court Nov. 29 at 9 a.m. to face charges. In seeking comment, a working phone number for Manuel could not be located.
