City, Allied Waste discuss updates

McALESTER — Relief is on the way.

Not relief from the 100 degree-plus temperatures — but relief for McAlester residents who’ve been paying an additional $3 fee to have an extra trash polycart container outside their residence.

That appeared to be the consensus of the McAlester City Council during a workshop held at city hall beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Although no items calling for a formal vote were listed on the Thursday night workshop agenda, councilors discussed the issue at length and indicated they planned to bring up the matter again at a future meeting.

They also planned to hold a public hearing on trash pick-up-related issues at some point.

Work on the item is not expected to be completed until September, which is when any changes are expected to go into effect.

Thursday evening’s workshop agenda simply called for a “Discussion and update of contract between the city of McAlester and Allied Waste for sanitation services.”

Many of the proposed changes — which still must be approved by a formal vote of the council following further negotiations with Allied Waste — were minor.

The additional polycart issue came up after City Manager Pete Stasiak said he had been contacted by Allied representatives about a week and a-half ago.

“They’re having a problem with bags,” Stasiak said, referring to trash bags filled with trash that some residents are stacking next to the blue polycart containers after the containers are filled.

While the polycart containers can be picked up by a mechanized arm, Allied Waste workers must manually pick up the bags.

Allied Waste indicated there are about 1,100 residential trash customers in the city who continually stack the additional bags beside already-filled containers, according to Stasiak.

Others utilize the second polycart they can get after paying the extra fee.

“About 300 already pay for the second polycart,” Stasiak said.
