Rachel (York) Mangrum

McALESTER — Rachel (York) Mangrum, 92, of Indianola, died Friday, March 1, 2013, in Okmulgee.

The family will receive visitors from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Service.

Graveside funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Choate Prairie Cemetery officiated by Mike Ross.

Funeral services are under direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

Born June 10, 1920 in Scipio, she was the daughter of Eugene James (E.J.) and Arvie Epps Thomas. She began her education at Choate Prairie after moving with her parents to that area. She graduated from Indianola High School in the class of 1938.

She married John H. “Mex” York Nov. 23, 1940 in Benton County, Ark.

After her marriage she began her career with the United States Postal Service in Indianola as a postal clerk.

Her husband passed away in 1962.

She married Elmer Mangrum on May 25, 1964 and they remained married until his death on June 18, 1991.

Rachel worked as a postal clerk until her retirement in 1973. She lived in Pittsburg County until moving to Okmulgee in November for health reasons to be near her daughter.

She joined the Indianola Baptist Church March 31, 1947 and remained a member until her death.

She was also a member of the Order of The Eastern Star.

She enjoyed painting, traveling, shopping, going to the coffee shop with her friends, dancing, fishing, playing cards and spending time with her family.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John Eddie and Ruthie York, of    Oologah; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen J. and Buddy Collins of Morris; four grandsons and spouses, Tim and Tracy Collins,    of Heath, Texas; Chris and Debi Collins of Morris; Eric and Crysti York of Talala; Jay and Jill York of Skiatook; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Buddy Thomas and wife Barbara, of Indianola; Charles Thomas, of Norman; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her parents E. J. and Arvie Thomas; four sisters, Jewel Pickle, Ona Clark, Lois Pickle and Faye Thomas; and, two brothers, Albert Thomas and Bill Thomas.
