Mary Ellen (Smith) Griffin
Mary Ellen (Smith) Griffin, 74, of Kiowa, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, in Tuskahoma.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 6 to 8 tonight at Bishop Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Praise Fellowship Church, south of Kiowa, with Aaron Brown officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mike Farris. Burial will be at Kiowa Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
Born Jan. 17, 1932, in Ward Springs, she was the daughter of David Martin and Artia Arizona Smith. She graduated from Savanna High School in 1952 and married Farris Fletcher Griffin Sr. on Dec. 20, 1951. They lived in Weathers before moving to Kiowa in 1961.
She worked for Seamprufe in McAlester for several years before attending McAlester Beauty College and receiving her beauticians license. She owned and operated Mary’s Beauty Shop in Kiowa for several years until 1979 and then worked at the Kiowa Senior Citizens Center until retiring.
She was a member of the Pittsburg Indian Mission Church and enjoyed singing gospel music and crochet.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Andy Johnson, of Kiowa, Louise and Jimmy Brown, of Kiowa, and Rhydonia and Greg Baucom, of McAlester; three sons and daughters-in-law, Farris and Brenda Griffin, of Ashland, Dick and Kathy Griffin, of McGee Valley, and Jack and Lee Ann Griffin, of McAlester.
Also, her grandchildren, Daphne Johnson, Timothy Johnson, Dwayne and Rachael Griffin, Wesley and Wendy Griffin, Daniel Griffin, Aaron Brown, Matthew Brown, Brian Baucom, Angela Baucom, Danielle Griffin, Clayton Griffin, Zac and Stephanie Marsh, Sam Grantham and Keaton Smith; her great-grandchildren, Taylor Griffin, Cheyenne and Tyler Watson, Colton Griffin and Lee Seth Marsh.
And, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Beatrice Sam, of McAlester, and Ida Mae and Claude Boggs, Globe, Ariz.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Kermit and Adell Smith, of Oklahoma City, and John Smith, Indianapolis.
And, a brother-in-law, Nevelle Easterling, Nash, Texas; a sister-in-law, Ruby Smith, of McAlester, and numerous nieces, nephews and dearest friend, Genice Mabry, of Kiowa.
Pallbearers will be Dwayne Griffin, Wesley Griffin, Daniel Griffin, Timothy Johnson, Aaron Brown, Brian Baucom, Matthew Brown and Clayton Griffin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Daphne Johnson, Angela Baucom, Danielle Griffin, Stephanie Marsh, Andy Johnson, Jimmy Brown, Greg Baucom, Gary Mabry and Charles Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Artia and David Smith; her husband, Farris F. Griffin Sr. in 1995; three brothers, Toy Smith, Lee Smith and Jim Smith; three sisters, Esther Smith, Irene Easterling and Geneva Thrilkeld; three brothers-in-law, Leroy Stokes, John Sam and Richard Thrilkeld, and four sisters-in-law, Pauline Smith, Francis Smith, Betty Smith and Bessie Smith.
