McALESTER —
Raymond Winfred Clemons, 84, of McAlester, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Veterans Center in Talihina.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with the Rev. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy, American Legion Post No. 79, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1098. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home
of McAlester.
Born Nov. 5, 1928, in Hartshorne, he was the son of Guy Winfred and Cleo Fernon (Doughty) Clemons. He grew up in Hartshorne and Arch then moved to California for a short time before returning to Arch.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1976, serving in Korea and Vietnam, and was stationed in Japan, China, Iceland and Newfoundland.
After his retirement from the Navy, he worked as an insurance agent with American Fidelity for 20 years. He also operated the Yellow, Checker and City Cab Company for several years.
He married Carol Quail and she preceded him in death in 1996. He later married Claudene (Ross) Myers on Dec. 29, 1997, in VanBuren, Ark. Together they were members of the Good Sam Club and traveled all over with that group.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 79 of McAlester and was a life member of the McAlester VFW Post 1098.
Survivors include his wife, Claudene Clemons, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Karen Clemons, of Valrico, Fla., and David and Connie Clemons, of McAlester; one daughter, Jeannine Clemons, of Burlington, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Sandra and Dave Grantham, and Becky and Mike Bingham.
Also, three grandchildren, Bryan and Johnna Clemons, Krista Clemons and Crystal and Nick Perron; six great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Ann Cottier, Pat Hudgens, and Joyce and Gerald Puderer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; three sisters, Helen Whitehouse, Fernon Schiller and Robbie Fite, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Lacy Workman.
Pallbearers will be Joe Whitehouse, Steve Whitehouse, Norman Lawson, Dave Grantham, Mike Bingham and Ken Roberts.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Good Samaritan Club, American Legion members and Vernon Underwood.
