Katharine Dismuke Carlton dies 89

McALESTER — Katharine Dismuke Carlton, 89, of McAlester, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2012.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chaney-Harkins Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chaney-Harkins Chapel. Interment will follow at the Kiowa Cemetery. 

Funeral services are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.

Born in Kiowa on Dec. 27, 1922, she was the daughter of Hattie and Noble Dismuke. She married James C. Carlton Jr. on Oct. 29, 1938.

She was a long-time resident of McAlester until she moved to Texas to be near her family.

As a young mother she supported her children by working in managerial positions at Seamprufe and Elsings until their closures. After receiving her AA degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, she became a counselor at what is now the Oaks Behavioral Health Center of McAlester and worked there until her retirement.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, McAlester.

She was also active in Oklahoma Eastern Star and held the office of Grand Worthy Matron. She was a china painter, involved with city, county, and state china painters’ groups and served as president of the Oklahoma China Painters Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Carlton Jr.; parents, Hattie and Noble Dismuke; brother, Noble Dismuke Jr.; granddaughter, Wendy Carlton, and a host of in-laws.

She is survived by four children; three daughters, Carolyn Barros (David), Linda Stone (Frank), Celestine Jan Peterson (Phillip); son, James C. Carlton III (Christine); 10 grandchildren, Kathy Rowell, of Blanco, and John Hernandez, of McAlester, Wallace, Mark and Timothy Owens, Sara, Phillip Jr., Edie Peterson, Lisa Scarrow and James C. Carlton IV; 14 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
