Shathen LaVere Sawyer

McALESTER — Shathen LaVere Sawyer, 25, of McAlester, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at his home.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Morrison officiating. Burial will be at Indianola Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Aug. 1, 1986, in Goodland, Kan., he was the son of Kevin LaVere Sawyer and Rodena Lynn Dizmang Sawyer. During his junior and senior years he attended Kiamichi Technology Center in McAlester, where he earned his certified welding certificate.

He graduated from Indianola High School in the Class of 2005 where he was active in the agricultural department. He was currently studying diesel gas compression at Oklahoma State University Tech in Okmulgee.

He enjoyed being in the outdoors, hunting, fishing and mud racing. He also enjoyed working as a mechanic on various cars and trucks.

He was a member of the New Hope Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his father, Kevin Sawyer and wife, Nicole, of Paola, Kan.; his mother, Rodena Brannick and husband, Steve, of McAlester; sisters and brother, Riley Sawyer, of Paola, Lexus Morrison and husband, Daniel, of McAlester, Lyndsay Carter and husband, Nathan, of Paola, Jacob Clayton, of Lawrence, Kan., and Sandra Nichole Barrero, of Wichita, Kan.

Also, nieces and nephews, Cayden Carter, Cash Carter and Adriana Barrero; grandparents, Gail Sawyer, of Paola, Dorothy Hunnicutt, of Paola, Dareld and Carolyn Dizmang, of New Braunfels, Texas, and John Brannick, of Colby, Kan.

And, aunts and uncles, Kyle Sawyer and wife, Karen, Keith Sawyer and wife, Dedra, Chris Walker and wife, Raquel, Rick Dizmang and wife, Jean, Mike Brannick and wife, Tia, Johnny Brannick and wife, Margarita, and Susan Hawkins and husband, Larry, and numerous cousins, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Terry Sawyer and Merrit Walker Jr., and his grandmother, Beverly Brannick.

Pallbearers will be Jacob Clayton, Nathan Carter, Josh Tissington, Daniel Morrison, Tyler Partain and David Hartsfield.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle Kerfes, Tanner Kerfes, David Watson and Dillon Tissington.
