McALESTER — Gerald Glenn Stokes, 87, formerly of McAlester, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, in Acworth, Ga.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Ron Chambers and John Burks officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born July 30, 1925, in Indianola, he was the son of Homer and Nell (McKinney) Stokes. He grew up and received his education in Indianola.

Following high school, he served in the United States Army Air Corps.

He attained a degree in banking at Baton Rouge School of Banking of the South in Louisiana.

He married Laura Sherrill on June 2, 1945. They established their home in McAlester before making Tulsa their home for many years.

The couple returned to McAlester in 2007 and recently moved to Georgia to live with their daughter.

He held offices at multiple banking institutions in Oklahoma over the years, including First National Bank of McAlester. During this time, he was also involved in various civic organizations.

While living in Tulsa, he held the office of general secretary of the Tulsa Scottish Rite. He was also a 33rd Degree Mason.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and flying. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Stokes, of the home; son, Mark Stokes and wife, Sarah, Birmingham, Ala.; daughter, Sherrill Martin, Acworth, Ga.; three grandsons and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold Stokes and Kenneth Stokes.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Cameron, Jerry Pharis, Ben Kelly, Keith Madden, Ronald Stokes and Mark Stokes.

Memorials may be made to Tulsa Scottish Rite Charitable and Educational Foundation or the Oklahoma Research Foundation.
