McALESTER —
James F. Stephens, 85, of McAlester, died Feb. 7, 2013, at his home.
Graveside services were held Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at the Arpelar Cemetery in Arpelar. Funeral arrangements were under the supervision of Chaney Harkins Funeral Home, McAlester.
He was born Dec. 31, 1927, to Roy and Bessie (Anderson) Stephens in Haywood. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served abroad on the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Franklin and U.S.S. Leyte, and with a SB2C dive bomber squadron. He married Barbara Ashton on Oct. 17, 1949, in Elko, Nev. He retired from Greyhound as a bus driver. His hobbies included old car restoration and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Stephens of the home; son, Alan Stephens and wife Gail of Benicia, Calif.; grandchildren, Alicia Raffel, and husband, Richard, and Danielle Patterson and husband, Mike, all of Benicia, Calif.; great granddaughter, Emerald Maloney of Benicia, Calif.; extended family, Shirley and Lee McClain, of Supulpla; Sharon and Barney Wakole, of Stuart, and Dave and Bea Cuenod, Frank and Lynn Gonzales, and Carolos and Andy Gonzales, all of McAlester.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Bessie Stephens, brothers, John and George Stephens, sister, Flora Stephens Clopp and best friend, J.W. Cravins.
