William D. “Bill” Cotton, 91, of Wilburton

McALESTER — William D. “Bill” Cotton, 91, of Wilburton, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, in Muskogee.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 at the United States War Veterans Colony community building south of Wilburton. Burial will be at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waldrop Funeral Home of Wilburton.

Born Nov. 3, 1921, in Oklahoma City, he was the son of J. G. and Sallie Cotton. He married Jimmie Jennings-Brown in 1942 and they had three sons. His wife preceded him in death in 2009.

He began working as an electrician at the age of 13, served as an electrician in the U.S. Navy SeaBees during World War II on Hawaii and Saipan, and continued as an electrician until his retirement 40 years later. He also served as a member of the executive board for his local union, IBEW 1141, for many years.

He was a charter member and deacon of Millwood Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.

He and his wife moved to the U.S. War Veterans Colony in Wilburton in 1985, where he served on the board of governors and their volunteer fire department for many years. They enjoyed traveling in their Airstream RVs and were active in the Airstream Club. He was an active member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his son, Wayne and wife, Chris, of Durant, and his son, John and wife, Joan, of McAlester; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie, and son, Dave.
