Aurilla Christine Hazlewood dies at 81

McALESTER — Aurilla Christine Hazlewood, 81, of McAlester, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be at  2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of McAlester with Dr. Randall Adams officiating and the Rev. W. Lee “Dub” Brown assisting. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

She was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Savanna, to James Andrew and Beulah Mackey Jones. She graduated from Savanna High School in the class of 1948 and then attended Eastern Oklahoma State College. She married Vestal Hazlewood on May 8, 1950, in Fort Smith, Ark. She worked in McAlester with the Civil Service. They moved to Midwest City in 1957 where she did clerical work for Tinker Air Force Base. In 1964 they returned to McAlester and she worked for the Social Security Administration until retirement in 1987. 

She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of McAlester where she taught fifth grade Sunday school class, worked in the nursery for 20 years, worked vacation Bible school each year and was active in many other functions of the church. She was proud of her Indian heritage and served two terms as president of the Ohoyohoma Club of McAlester. Her mother was an original Dawes Commission enrollee and her grandfather was the last sitting court judge of the Oklahoma Indian Territory.

Survivors include her husband, Vestal Hazlewood, of the home; a son, David Hazlewood, of McAlester; a daughter, Diane Malicoat, of McAlester; three grandchildren, Dennis Malicoat, of McAlester, Katie Thompson and husband, Chris,  of Denver, Colo., and Shawn Hazlewood, of McAlester.

And, a great-granddaughter, Hattie Belle Malicoat; a sister, Mellanie Shuman, of McAlester, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Beulah Jones; three brothers, Mack Jones, Oscar Jones and Raphael Jones, and a sister, Marcella Wilkins.

Pallbearers include Tom Cook, Bob Chapman, Mel Yarbrough, Jim Cook, Dewell Ray Jenson and Tom Craig.

Honorary pallbearers include Jim Miller, Jim Ray Thompson and Leon Bernard.

The family requests memorials be made to The American Cancer Society, 4110 S. 100th East Ave., Suite 101, Tulsa, OK,  74146.
