McALESTER —
Dorothy Gladys Snowder, 95, of McAlester died Nov. 23, 2012, at New Hope Care Center in McAlester.
Born May 31, 1917, she was the valedictorian of Quinton High School in 1934 and received a scholarship to Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.
She attended Hershey’s Business College where she met her husband, Lawrence A. Snowder.
They were married June 19, 1936. She worked for A.B. Ringland Insurance and Real Estate on and off for 15 years. After her children were grown, she worked part time at Puterbaugh School and for the I.R.S. Her last employer was the Soil Conservation Service.
She was generous to charities and active in many civic organizations, including Fortnightly, Eastern Star, PTA, Boy and Girl Scouts and Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of the First Christian Church and served as its treasurer for many years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; parents Harvey W. and Eileen (McGonigle) Abernethy; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Abernethy.
She is survived by her daughter, Frances E. Snowder, of McAlester; sons, Robert L. Snowder, of College Park, MD, and Stephen A. Snowder, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; grandchildren, Stephen F. Snowder, of New York City, N.Y., and Katherine Snowder, of Florida; nephews, Richard and William Ware, Abernethy of Calif., Cecil L. Jones, of Edmond, and his wife Carolyn; niece, Geraldyne (Jones) Cheney, of Oklahoma City; and cousins, Melba Walker, of Tulsa, Linda Parrish, of Harrah, and Maxine Harkins and Frances Steele, of Fredonia, Kan.
A memorial service will be held at Brumley Mills Funeral Home, McAlester, at a date to be arranged in the spring.
