McALESTER —
Nancy Carpenter, 77, of Arpelar, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at her home.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with Pastor Bart Patterson officiating, assisted by Dorothy French. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
Born Jan. 24, 1935, in Indianola, she was the daughter of Will and Nancy Bell (Lishbrook) Effinger. She grew up in the Indianola and McAlester areas and married James Edgar Carpenter on Jan. 14, 1957, in Tahlequah.
She retired from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police No. 176.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 3085, the Pittsburg County Republican Women’s Committee and the Moose Lodge.
She enjoyed reading, church and community activities and volunteer work for Oklahoma State Penitentiary. She was a member of the Longtown Full Gospel Church.
Survivors include children and spouses, Cathy (Carpenter) and Ralph Decker, of California, Cynthia (Cole) and Steve Henrichs, of McAlester, Carla (Carpenter) Austin, of McAlester, Curtis and Jeannie Carpenter, Rogers, Ark., and Jamie (Carpenter) and Aaron Smith, of Atoka.
Also, 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ledessa Effinger, of Eufaula, and Irene Effinger, of Oklahoma City; two brothers-in-law, Warren Drumheller, of McAlester, and Darrell Cozad, of McAlester, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Johnny, George, Willy and Henry Effinger; sisters, Florence Effinger, Maggie (Effinger) Trollinger, Molly (Effinger) Janes-Young and Easter (Effinger) Cozad-Drumheller; sister-in-law, Alta Effinger, and brothers-in-law, John Trollinger, Bud Janes and Raymond Young.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Holden, Tyler Mason, Adam Austin, Kolten Carpenter, Christopher Taylor and Jeremy Nelson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chester Mason, Jeremy Taylor, Bronson Carpenter, Stephen Taylor and Tim Turmin.
