Virginia Sadler Larkin dies at 98

McALESTER — Virginia Sadler Larkin, 98, of McAlester, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at a local nursing center.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Tom Murray officiating. Private family burial will be held. Arrangements are under direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

A lifelong resident of McAlester, she was born April 28, 1914, in Belleville, Ark. She was the daughter of James Tillman and Nora Melton Sadler. She attended McAlester schools, graduating in the Class of 1932. In December of that year she married Thomas W. “Toby” Wheatley Jr.

Having been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of McAlester for more than 80 years, she served as director of Christian education there for 23 years, retiring in 1976.

She had been active in the Presbyterian Womens Society, Girl Scouts, Fortnightly Club, PTA, United Commercial Travelers, Meals on Wheels and Rainbow Girls Organization and traveled extensively.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy Wheatley Ewton and husband, Bill, Temple, Texas; grandson, William Thomas Ewton and wife, Karen, Salado, Texas; granddaughter, Melanie Ewton England and husband, Christopher, Abilene, Texas.

Also, sisters-in-law, Helen Sadler, of Oklahoma City, and Marguerite Sadler, of McAlester; great-grandchildren, Virginia Lyn “Jenny” Ewton, Cole Ewton, Katey Ewton and Annie Ewton, all of Salado, Texas, and Jessica England Owen and husband, Aaron, Abilene, Texas; great-granddaughter, Madeline Owen, Abilene, Texas.

And, nieces and nephews, Virginia Johnston, Larkspur, Calif., John Christophel and wife, Lois, of Delaware, Marilyn Sadler Thrasher and husband, Bob, of McAlester, Jim Sadler and wife, Deborah, of McAlester, and George Sadler, Copper Mountain, Colo.; stepchildren, Janice Parker and husband, Larry, Hot Springs Village, Ark., and William Giles Larkin and wife, Jean, Dallas, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Thomas W. “Toby” Wheatley Jr., Walter Clarke, and Giles W. Larkin; sister, Regenia Sadler Christophel; brothers, Melton Sadler and J.T. Sadler, and great-grandson, Benton Thomas Ewton.
