McALESTER — McAlester senior Darrion Brown’s basketball career hit a road block almost exactly a year ago, at a January 2012 tournament in Muskogee. Having missed a fast-break layup, Brown went up again for the offensive rebound.
“The next thing I know, my knee gets taken out from underneath me,” Brown said Tuesday. “I thought it was just hurt, and I tried to get up, and I couldn’t walk or anything. When I ran, I could feel it sliding,”
Brown suffered a torn meniscus and an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee. He said he tried to rest it and return before the 2011-12 season ended, but it quickly became clear he’d need surgery, which happened back in June.
“I couldn’t get out and do anything, play basketball or do anything,” Brown said of his post-surgery days. “I couldn’t even shoot, because Coach didn’t want me to hurt it again during preseason.”
