McALESTER — McAlester High School’s football team last played Stillwater in 1968. The Buffaloes won their last state title that year, so what would be a better way to begin their quest for another state title than by hosting the Pioneers in their season-opener Friday night at Hook Eales Stadium?
“We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Buffs coach Bryan Pratt said Thursday.
The Buffaloes and Pioneers have far more similarities than differences: both teams made their playoffs last year, the Buffs going 12-0 before losing in the 5A state semi-finals, and the Pioneers going 8-2 and losing in the first round of the 6A playoffs to Jenks.
Both teams also graduated many high-caliber players last season, making this year’s teams relatively young. Sophomore Braxton Noble, Stillwater’s starting quarterback, begins the 2012-13 season with very little varsity experience.
