Jase Romine an “epic” nose guard

McALESTER — McAlester High School senior Jase Romine likes to read. When he has free time, he’ll usually grab something by Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson or Leo Tolstoy.

But in Senior English, his favorite class at MHS, he’s discovered epic literature such as Beowulf, the Aeneid and the Iliad. And as he said Thursday, the ways characters in those stories battled through adversity and overcame conflict has really appealed to him.

Romine is, after all, the starting nose guard for the McAlester Buffaloes.

“Every play is a battle,” Romine said. “You’re looking at the guy in front of you, and it’s ‘I’m going to beat you or you’re going to beat you.’ ... At the end, it’s whoever’s the toughest.

“I’m going to punch you in the mouth, you’re going to punch me in the mouth, and hopefully at the end I’m going to knock you out.”
