Nacogdoches, Tex. — Sabrina Burns, Stephen F. Austin University senior and 2008 graduate of McAlester High School, earned Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. Burns had already made that award’s Honorable Mention list twice this season.
Burns recorded 17 blocks in three matches last week, helping the Ladyjacks to a pair of wins. Burns blocked four in a 3-1 loss to Houston Baptist on October 16, then registered nine rejections in a 3-1 win over McNeese State on Thursday. She blocked four in a four-set win over Lamar on Saturday.
Those 17 blocks moved Burns into the all-time top 10 in blocks at SFA. With 255 total blocks, Burns needs just two blocks across the Ladyjacks’ last seven games of the season to take over ninth, and 20 to tie SFA ‘2000 graduate Kristy Rhodes for eighth.
