SAVANNA — Savanna 54, Quinton 6:
When a football team mixes long scoring drives on offense with short stints on defense, it usually wins. Savanna achieved such a pattern against Quinton, scoring on a 75-yard drive to open the game, then getting off the field quickly on defense.
Once they got the ball back, the Bulldogs marched down the field again, with Christian Preston scoring his second rushing touchdown in a row to put his team up 14-0.
“We set the tempo right off the bat,” Savanna coach James Bond said Saturday.
Facing the Bulldogs’ well-oiled offensive machine, the Savages had to start throwing the ball more and more. The Bulldogs’ secondary proved itself up for the challenge, picking off three passes, one of which Seth Burke returned for a touchdown.
“They had a lot of routes and combinations that they ran, and I believe we did pretty good on covering a lot of those things,” Bond said.
“It was really a good defensive effort.”
Savanna led 40-0 at halftime, and with the win clinched a return to the playoffs. With two district games left, Savanna will face tough challenges from Talihina and Central Sallisaw as the Bulldogs try to finish the season with the highest seed possible.
