Playoffs Update: Kiowa reaches state tournament

McALESTER — The Kiowa Cowgirls had two chances to return to the state tournament. They needed just one, beating Dewar 60-58 in Friday’s Area iV Final at the Southeast Expo Center in McAlester.

“They really put a lot of emphasis on the playoffs, my girls,” Kiowa coach Wade Danil said Tuesday. “I think they were just waiting for the playoffs. ... They just know that it’s time to get serious when the playoffs start.”

In last year’s state tournament, Kiowa lost in the first round. Daniel said the number of great shooters on this year’s team could translate to a longer run.

“Once you get there, anything’s possible,” Daniel said.

“We’ve got a good mix. We’ve got people who have a little experience, and we have a little youth to go with it.”

Kiowa’s quest for its first girls’ basketball state title starts Thursday at Oklahoma City University. It will play Fort Cobb-Broxton at 7 p.m.
