HAILEYVILLE — Wilburton 56, Regent Prep 49: Lane Knight starred for the Diggers, rushing for 253 yards on 20 carries and scoring five touchdowns. His longest, a 55-yard rush, came in the first quarter.
The Diggers took a 48-21 lead into halftime, but key injuries forced coach Brian Kirkhart to juggle his roster, and the moves took their toll on the Diggers in the second half.
“We didn’t move the ball very well, turned the ball over, and they started scoring,” Kirkhart said. “We got gassed in the second half.”
Regent went up 49-48 with just five minutes left in the game. Knight then slightly hyper-extended his foot on the next drive, leaving the game.
Cade Fite took over at quarterback, hitting Mikey Guadausky on a game-winning 16-yard touchdown strike with 22 seconds left in the game.
Kirkhart said Knight’s injury wasn’t serious, and that Knight had already had it checked out.
“He’s going to be fine,” Kirkhart said. “He’ll be able to go this week.”
