McALESTER — Both the Bishop Kelley Comets and McAlester Buffaloes began their seasons without much previous varsity experience. Both teams graduated many key seniors last season, and both starting lineups needed time to gel together.
But while the Buffs finished their regular season 6-16, the Comets finished 15-7, taking second in the Metro Lakes Conference.
“They had success and the JV level and the freshman level when they were coming up, so they play,” Comets coach Danny Limes said Thursday.
“We had a lot of kids that didn’t play football, so we’ve had them in the gym for a long time.”
As many as four Comets guards could be on their home court at any given moment during Friday’s regional semi-final game against the Buffs. Junior Matt Craig is the Comets’ only player with prior varsity experience.
Bishop Kelley is at 3905 S. Hudson Ave. The Buffs and Comets tip off at 8 p.m.
