Project Spider discussed in secret at McAlester City Council meeting.

McALESTER — City councilors once again met in a possibly illegal executive session to discuss “Project Spider” during a special meeting of the McAlester City Council on Tuesday.

The meeting was called on Tuesday afternoon to convene at 5:30 p.m.

But before convening behind closed doors to discuss Project Spider, for what one Freedom of Information expert called a violation of the Open Meeting Law, councilors heard a presentation which Mayor Steve Harrison said was the real reason for the last minute special meeting.

“Let’s move to (agenda) item four for the main reason for the meeting tonight,” Harrison said.

The presentation was from a company whose purpose is to bring businesses and tourism to the area and “marketing economic development.”

But it wasn’t given by MPower the city funded economic development group, but by another company called Marketing Alliance Inc. from Jackson Mississippi.
