McALESTER — McAlester couldn’t manufacture much offense early in Thursday’s game against Savanna. Lady Dawg pitching phenom Bryn Houlton all but silenced the free-swining Lady Buffs, mixing a powerful riseball with a devastating curve to breeze perfectly once through the lineup.
His team unable to get the ball beyond the infield dirt, coach Jackie Cumbie switched to a smallball offense.
“Every time we asked a girl to put a bunt down, she executed it,” Cumbie said. “Sometime (Savanna) made plays, sometimes they didn’t. We put the pressure on them.”
That pressure paid off for McAlester, which forced Savanna into four errors in the final two innings and turned them into four runs. The Lady Buffs overcame an early deficit to beat the Lady Dawgs in the 100-degree heat at Bud Hale Softball Complex, 6-2.
