Food bank hosts Open House

McALESTER — More than 50 people attended an Open House at the McAlester branch of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma on Dec. 4.

“We are having a great turnout, the community has been wonderful,” Eileen Bradshaw director of CFBEO said during the event.

McAlester Mayor Steve Harrison and Dr. Janet Wansick dean at Eastern Oklahoma State College were among several who attended the open house.

“I just wanted to see what they had to offer, so that I can pass the information along,” Wansick said.

The food bank provides fresh and frozen food to partner programs such as soup kitchens, food pantries such as Shared Blessings and Hope House, said Shannon Snelling branch manager.

The Indianola Senior Center is one of the partner programs that benefits from the food bank.

“It’s really great to have them here,” said Ike Bandy director of the Indianola Senior Center. Bandy said his wife would have to drive to Tulsa to get the food before the McAlester branch was open.

Jean Surginer volunteers for another partner program in the McAlester area.

“I really like what they have here,” Surginer said.

Meanwhile, Snelling said the new McAlester location will service Pittsburg County as well as seven additional counties in the food bank’s service area in southeast Oklahoma. Those locations include Choctaw, Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain, McIntosh, Pittsburg and Pushmataha counties and a total of 78 current Partner Programs of the food bank.
