Community Thanksgiving Dinner nears; calls still taken, volunteers needed

McALESTER — Those who want to participate in the 27th Annual Pittsburg County Community Thanksgiving Dinner, but who have not yet made the arrangements, need to go ahead and do so.

The number to phone to make a reservation to participate is 918-423-7379.

Plans call for the annual holiday dinner with all of the trimmings to be served around noon Thanksgiving Day, which is Thursday. The meal will be served at the George Nigh National Guard Armory at the corner of Third Street and Polk Avenue.

Meanwhile, volunteers who want to help out with food preparations can go ahead and show up at the armory on Tuesday, said Jim Kelley, the former Pittsburg County assessor who is one of the volunteers who helps with the event.

“We’ll be going full-swing Tuesday morning,” Kelley said.

“We can use all the help we can get over the next three days,” he said. “The more there are, the easier it is.”

Some of the work on Tuesday involves preliminary preparations.

“We hope to get the celery and onions sautéed,” Kelley said, so those ingredients will be ready to mix in with the dressing when it is cooked at a later time.

Before the onions and celery can be sautéed, of course, the onions must be peeled and both the onions and celery must be chopped.

Everyone who wants to participate in the 27th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is welcome to do so, with no age or income guidelines in place.

In addition to those who eat at the armory, meals can be picked up at the site on Thanksgiving Day. Also, for those who are home-bound or unable to get to the armory, arrangements can be made for home delivery for Pittsburg County residents, according to organizers of the event.
