Commissioners approve grant application for road work

McALESTER — The Pittsburg County commissioners approved an application for state and federal grant funds to help resurface a six mile stretch of county road.

The commissioners held a public hearing on the agenda item Monday at 10 a.m. in the commissioners conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse. Steven Clemente, with KEDDO, a sub-state planning agency that assists counties and communities with federal and state grants, presented information regarding the grant application during Monday’s public hearing.

The grant application is to help fund the oil and chip seal resurfacing of a six-mile stretch of road in the northern part of the county in District 1, Clemente said. The six-mile stretch is on McInally Road, Clemente said, beginning at State Highway 9A and continuing south to McInally Flats Road.

The commissioners approved both a federal and state grant application for funding this road work. The federal grant application is for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the amount of $69,830, Clemente said. The CDBG grant originates from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The state grant application, a Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP) grant which is for small communities in rural areas, is for $80,000, Clemente said. Commissioners also approved county funds for the project in the amount of $30,451.05 to assist with labor and equipment. The total project costs, Clemente said, is $180,281.05.

Also on the agenda, commissioners opened sealed bids for janitorial services and mat maintenance and uniform services. The commissioners unanimously approved accepting the bids as opened and tabled the acceptance of bids for further review.

The county commissioners meet every Monday at 9 a.m. in the county commissioners conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse. The meetings are open to the public.
