Pet shop owner seeks new digs after landlord gives her the boot
A McAlester pet store owner is under the gun to pack up and move her animals.
Loxi Sykes and her husband, Bill Sykes, who is currently deployed in Iraq, have owned and operated Pet Krazy at 209 E. Chickasaw Ave. since April 2006.
Sykes received an eviction notice this week from High Hill Property Company. In the letter it says the store’s lease will not be extended beyond Dec. 31.
The owner of the building says other tenets in the strip mall have complained about odors and loose animals.
Sykes said the odor comes from raccoons that get in-between the walls and says that she isn’t getting many complaints from her neighbors.
“We’ve blossomed so much, now we have until December to find another place. I’m desperate. I will take anywhere,” Sykes said.
The shop is home to a variety of critters, from an umbrella cockatoo to a donated iguana named Giant.
The shop has also become a refuge for abandoned animals. “People come in a drop them off,” Sykes said.
The shop is small, so most of the animals taken in are cats and kittens.
“We deworm, deflea and administer mite medicine,” Sykes said.
Once the animals have been treated they are set up for adoption at a small fee of $5.99. According to Sykes, the cost for her is three times that much.
The pet shop works with the Partners for Animals Welfare Society, an organization that rescues and places homeless and abused animals.
Occasionally PAWS will host a pet adoption day at the shop. The shop also has a “Fear Factor day” where people are welcomed to come in and pet the reptiles.
