Blood drive

National Oilwell Varco to hold a blood drive

McALESTER — National Oilwell Varco will hold a blood drive for the Oklahoma Blood Institute on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at 501 N. George Nigh Expwy.

Each donor will receive an OBI ball cap, health screenings and Donor Rewards points, redeemable for items in OBI’s online store. Any donors can forgo the ball cap and in turn, OBI will make a monetary contribution of similar value to the Global Blood Fund.

Although all blood types are needed, those with O-negative type blood are encouraged to donate. According to the American Association of Blood Banks, those with O-negative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population.

However, O-negative blood can be used by in any emergency situation when a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified.

Anyone 16 or older can typically donate blood. Sixteen-year-olds must weigh at least 125 pounds and provide signed parental permission. Those 17 years must weigh at least 125 pounds and those over 18 years must weigh at least 110 pounds.
