Boggs wins senate seat

McALESTER — In the Oklahoma State Senate District 7 race, Larry Boggs, R-Red Oak, has won the seat.

In official polling results Tuesday night, Boggs drew 14,160 votes over opponent J. Paul Lane’s 12,140, winning by 53.8 percent.

In Pittsburg County, Boggs also won, earning 7,958 votes over Lane’s 7,573.

Lane is a Democrat from McAlester.

“I think this is a victory for all of southeast Oklahoma,” Boggs said of his win. “First of all, I’d like to thank all the people who supported me.”

He said he wanted all those who didn’t support him to know “That I’ll still be your senator and do what ever it is that needs to be done in southeastern Oklahoma..

Meanwhile, his opponent also thanked those who helped with his campaign

“Supporters and friends have been wonderful,” Lane said. “They have worked so hard.”

“In many ways it has been a wonderful experience,” he said of running for state Senate. “Certainly no one runs to lose, but nonetheless, the people have spoken.”

He said he wished Boggs the best and hopes Boggs will be able to do the things he said he will do.

Boggs attended a Republican watch party held at Great Balls of Fire. When the word came in that Boggs won, Pittsburg County Republicans cheered, some teary with apparent joy. One in attendance was overheard saying. “God is good.”

The theme of the party was red, white and blue.

Lane attended a watch party at the home of Democrat Rep. Brian Renegar, D-17, and spent the evening in good spirits.

Both Lane and Boggs said they have enjoyed the experience and both said, win or lose, the experiences running for Oklahoma State Senate District 7 have been positive.
