New Atwoods store under construction
Plans call for it to be better, bigger and at a different location.
Dirt work is under way at the site where a new Atwoods retail store building is to be constructed in McAlester. The new store will be constructed along the highway, at 1505 S. George Nigh Expwy., in the area where the former golf driving range used to be located.
A building permit for the project has been issued through the city of McAlester to Hanson Construction Co., of Enid, said Dennis Lalli of the city of McAlester. The permit is to construct a building covering 54,400 square feet.
Atwoods’ current McAlester store is located at 700 E. Carl Albert Parkway, near the intersection of Carl Albert Parkway and Sixth Street.
Plans call for the store at the current Atwoods location in McAlester to close when the new store is opened.
“We’re hoping to be in there by the end of the year,” said Willie Huckabee, manager of Atwoods’ McAlester store. Huckabee noted that the schedule could change because of the weather.
“It will be a better facility and a larger one,” Huckabee said of the new store. “We’ll be able to carry more than we can here.”
Huckabee is looking forward to the new Atwoods store.
“That’s a better location,” he said. “We’re crowded here and we don’t have the room to do what we need to do.
“We’re all excited about it,” Huckabee said of the plans for the new location.
Atwoods calls itself “America’s Favorite Farm & Home Store” and the stores have merchandise and supplies for the ranch, farm and home. The company also includes clothing, lawn and garden supplies, tools, pet supplies, sporting goods and seasonal items in its merchandise
Based in Enid, Atwoods operates 39 stores located in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri, according to the company’s Web site.
