MFD trains for three days in vacant McAlester home

McALESTER — McAlester Fire Department personnel are in the process of training at a vacant McAlester home.

The training, which began Tuesday and concludes Thursday, took place in a vacant home on West Springer Avenue, said McAlester Fire Chief Brett Brewer.

“We did all kinds of training over there today,” Brewer told the News-Capital Tuesday afternoon. The training is so McAlester firefighters can brush up on their skills, Brewer said. “We try to do various types of training as often as we can.” Brewer said two weeks ago McAlester firefighters completed simulation training on a school bus wreck.

Brewer said this week’s training included fire attack training, mayday and firefighter rescue training, search and rescue training and ventilation training.

Speaking of the mayday training /firefighter rescue training, Brewer said, “That’s when they go in and rescue a firefighter that got lost or trapped.”

Brewer said search and rescue training involves “going in and searching for a victim.” And when discussing ventilation training, Brewer said, “That’s when you see ‘em chop a hole in the roof — which allows smoke and super-heated gases to escape.”
