Leatherneck loses locks

Member of the Leatherneck Motorcycle Club, former U.S. Marine Larry “Crash” Downs, of McAlester, is involved in many activities and devoted to helping the community. Downs is also active in the Marine League and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On May 16, Downs attended the Sgt. Grit's Gritogether, an annual social event for former and current Marines and their families to get together in Oklahoma City. There, Downs made a decision to change his look and help others in the process.

Sgt. Grit’s gives free “high and tight” Marine Corps style haircuts for those willing to sport the short do. Downs accepted the offer, allowing John O’Hair to cut more than 12 inches of hair. Downs made a donation of his hair to the Locks of Love organization.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides wigs and hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term hair loss from any diagnosis.

This organization helps children suffering from long term hair loss begin to rebuild their self-esteem and confidence.

Locks of Love accepts hair donations. In order to help the organization create wigs for children, the hair is evaluated for its usefulness according to the following guidelines: The hair must be at least 10 inches long. It must be clean and dry. Hair must be bundled in a ponytail or a braid. Bleached hair cannot be used; however, hair that has been dyed or permed can be used.
