Charges filed in alleged horse starvation case; one man in Pittsburg County Jail
Warrants have been issued for the arrest of a couple accused of starving three horses. Cheryll Alloy and Donald Gray, both of Rt. 1, Stuart, were charged on Friday with cruelty to animals.
The felony count accuses Gray and Alloy of starving the horses by depriving them of adequate nutrition and sustenance at their residence south of Ashland.
“We don’t tolerate that type of thing,” Pittsburg County Sheriff Joel Kerns said.
Alloy is being held in the Pushmataha County Jail on another charge, Lyons said.
As of this morning, Gray was being held at the Pittsburg County Jail. His bond is set at $5,000.
The three horses were noticed by Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Dep. Tommy Lyons on May 22 when he was serving an arrest warrant on another charge for the Pushmataha County Sheriff’s Department.
Lyons said he saw two of the horses penned on the property and a colt running loose. He noted the thin and poor condition of the horses and obtained a warrant to take the horses for medical treatment. According to Lyons, Alloy said that she had been treating the horses for “Rhino virus.”
The horses are now in the care of veterinarian Dr. Brian Renegar. He disputes that horses are suffering from “Rhino virus;” he says they are suffering from malnutrition.
The crime is punishable by up to five years in prison, a $500 fine, or both.
