Kiowa High School has announced the top students of the class of 2009. The school’s commencement ceremony was held Thursday.
Nina Nance has been selected as a valedictorian for the 2009 graduating class of Kiowa High School. She is the daughter of Phillip and Charyl Nance, the granddaughter of M.A. and Donna Danley, and the great granddaughter of Zeda Richardson.
Nance, a member of the academic team, was the FCCLA president for the 2006-2007 school year. She has been a member of 4-H since the fourth grade. She was a district officer for Skills USA her junior year. She has placed at numerous curriculum contests and has received numerous awards for academic excellence.
Nance plans to attend Eastern Oklahoma State College in the fall.
Shelby Barrow is the Kiowa class of 2009 salutatorian.
She is the daughter of Ira and Kara Barrow. She is the granddaughter of Colin and Patricia Joiner and Linda and the late Larry Buckles. She is the great granddaughter of Juanita Tryon.
Barrow has served president of the class of 2009. She served as the Kiowa FFA chapter president, vice president and treasurer. Barrow has also placed in many scholastic competitions. She received her state FFA Degree with academic excellence. She was nominated for “Who’s Who Among High School Students.”
Barrow recieved honorable mention at Academic All-State. She also helped organize a food and clothing drive for the people of Lone Grove who were affected by the tornado Feb. 10, 2009.
Barrow is a member of the Pittsburg County Junior Cattlemen’s Association, Kiowa 4-H Chapter, Kiowa FFA Chapter, National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association, National Junior Hereford Association, and Kiowa Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Barrow plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in chemistry. She would also like to attend dental school and acquire a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in hopes of one day having her own dentistry practice.
