Art gallery to host competitive art shows

McALESTER — Amateurs wanted.

According to the Southeastern Oklahoma Fine Arts Art Gallery newsletter, the gallery has slated upcoming art shows for amateur artists — young and old.

The gallery is currently taking painting submissions from amateur artists to exhibit and compete in an art show March 28 at the gallery at 30 E. Choctaw Ave., downtown McAlester.

Entry fee is $5 per piece, with a limiit of two art pieces. There will be a reception and prize money awarded to first, second and third place.

This event is intended for artists in the community who up until now may not have had the encouragement to “show their stuff,” or have never won a ribbon, says the newsletter.

The art will be judged locally and will be displayed at the gallery temporarily.

The next competitive art shows will be for photography May 16; for drawing Aug. 22; and student art Nov. 7.

According to the SOFA Art Gallery newsletter, an art class is scheduled by Brandy Brackett, the News-Capital’s page designer and SOFA Inc. member. The class will be a study of spring wildflowers in acrylic paint and is slated for April 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery.

There is a limit of 10 participants. The class is $30 per person with materials provided.

Sign up for the class in advance at the gallery.

SOFA Art Gallery has also scheduled an art auction in May. At the auction, SOFA Inc. members who are involved in their recent “Co Creating” project will sell their collaborated pieces at the gallery.

Details of the auction will be determined further at the next SOFA Inc. meeting April 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the SOFA ART Gallery.

Artists interested in joining SOFA Inc. may attend the meeting.

Gallery hours are now from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
