Have a seat: School board candidates begin filing Monday
School board filings in the McAlester Public School District, as well as in 15 other districts in Pittsburg County, are set to begin on Monday.
Declarations of candidacy for the school board seats in Pittsburg County will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the Pittsburg County Election Board office in the Professional Building, adjacent to City Hall at 10 E. Washington Ave.
In the McAlester school district, the two seats that are up for election are Office No. 1, currently held by Mike Price, for a four-year term, and Office No. 5, currently held by Karl Scifres, also for a four-year term.
The school board seats are to be filled during an election set for Feb. 9. If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the two candidates with the most votes will face each other during an election set for April 6.
Although Stuart and Clayton are in Hughes and Pushmataha counties, respectively, portions of the two school districts extend into Pittsburg County.
Other school districts where races are set and offices are open:
• McAlester — Office No. 1 for a four-year term and Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Canadian — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Clayton — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Crowder — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.

• Haileyville — Office No. 5 for a five-year term and Office No. 3 for an unexpired term.
• Haywood — Office No. 3 for a three-year term.

• Kiowa — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Krebs — Office No. 3 for a three-year term.
• Pittsburg — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Quinton — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Savanna — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Stuart — Office No. 5 for a five-year term.
• Tannehill — Office No. 3 for a three-year term.
Offices are non-partisan, meaning candidates don’t have to declare a political affiliation to file.
A candidate must be a qualified voter to file for office.
“They must have been a registered voter with that school district for the past six months,” said Pittsburg County Election Board Secretary Cathy Thornton.
The one exception is the McAlester school district.
“In McAlester, you have to have lived in that particular board district for the past six months,” Thornton said. She said the school board districts are different from the city wards.
A map of the McAlester board districts show both up for election are in the north part of the city. Thornton said anyone with any questions about the precise boundaries should contact the Pittsburg County Election Board office at 423-3877.
