Eyes a window to diagnosis
New machine leads to earlier detection of eye ailments
The eyes may have it, but if they do, Dr. Jeff Duff of McAlester Vision Center now has the capability of early detection and treatment for glaucoma and other debilitating eye ailments.
“I’m very pleased to announce the arrival of the latest technology in diagnosis and analysis of retinal diseases, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma,” Duff said. “The Cirrus HD-OCT, which stands for High Definition Optical Coherence Tomography, provides examination of the very back of the eye with capabilities that could result in the detection and diagnosis of these diseases.”
Glaucoma is a condition that results in the reduction of side vision, which begins to decrease and may lead to eventual restriction to central vision. Often there are no early symptoms, which creates an initial diagnostic delay. Duff added that there is a higher tendency of glaucoma in individuals with a family history of the condition, and in those of African American descent.
“Early detection is very important. You can have retinal nerve fiber layer loss before you start having a visual field problem,” he continued. “This technology can detect the disease maybe six or seven years before that, so you’d be way ahead of the game to get screened.”
Duff added that these optometric screenings can lead to the detection of ocular diseases that could be linked to possible life-threatening conditions such as strokes, brain tumors, melanoma and systemic disorders such as multiple sclerosis, hypertension and diabetes.
